  • 50 Years of Financial Crises

    Jacques de Larosière
"This story essentially tells of the financial crises that the markets always end up inflicting on those who have abused their innovations, their excesses and the lax atmosphere. Dealing with these crises - in often inventive ways - has taken up much more energy than their prevention or any substantive reforms. I had the privilege of being involved in some of these 'ways out of crisis'. I lived through their dramatic intensity and was, sometimes, able to contribute to pragmatic solutions which helped to steady the ship.

  • Pre-Suasion

    Robert Cialdini
When it comes to persuasion, success can begin before you say a word. `An instant classic.' Forbes `Utterly fascinating.' Adam Grant, author of Originals and Give and Take `Shockingly insightful.' Chip Heath, co-author of Switch and Made to Stick NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In his global bestseller Influence, Professor Robert Cialdini transformed the way we think about the craft of persuasion. Now he offers revelatory new insights into the art of winning people over: it isn't just what we say or how we say it that counts, but also what goes on in the moments before we speak. This is the world of `pre-suasion', where subtle turns of phrase, seemingly insignificant visual cues, and apparently unimportant details of location can prime people to say `yes' even before they are asked. And as Cialdini reveals, it's a world you can master. If you understand the tools of pre-suasion, you will better placed to win a debate, get support for an idea or cause, promote a campaign - even persuade yourself to do something you find difficult. Drawing on the latest research, and packed with fascinating case studies, Pre-Suasion is a masterclass in enhancing your powers of influence. `Mind-blowing.' Management Today `Accessible and intellectually rigorous.' Books of the Year, The Times `Fascinating, fluent and original.' Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist Strikes Back

  • Rural Development Through Islamic Banks

    Muhammad Umar Chapra
Categories: Books, Islamic Economics Books Tags: 1994, Muhammad Akram Khan, The Islamic Foundation, One of the basic problems faced by small scale and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia is the availability of financing access provided by financial institutions including banking institution. There are three types of Islamic bank operating in Indonesia presently: Islamic commercial bank, Islamic banking unit and Islamic rural bank. Providing the SMEs with sufficient financing source is highly required. This paper attempts to observe empirically the role that have been played by Islamic rural bank in financing the SMEs, by taking case study of Amanah Ummah Bank, the best Islamic rural bank in the country. Thirty small and medium entrepreneurs have been selected as the sample of the research, and have been deeply interviewed on September and October 2008. Descriptive statistics, IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) and CSI (Customer Satisfaction Index) methods have been used as analytical methods. The results show that the financing given by the bank does really help the SMEs. There are three factors, which are important, and which have satisfied the SMEs. These are easiness of bank's requirements, the speed of financing approval, and bank's services. In general, the respondents are of the view that the bank has shown a good performance.

  • The Only Way to Win: How Building Character Drives Higher Achievement and Greater Fulfilment in Business and Life

    Jim Loehr
he conditioning begins early in our lives. Great achievements will bring lasting happiness and fulfillment; great achievements form the bedrock of stable self-esteem and strong character; great achievements will become the foundation for a successful life. If these well-intentioned promises are true, why does winning never seem to be enough? In The Only Way to Win, Jim Loehr draws upon two decades of work with Fortune 500 executives; world-class athletes such as Monica Seles, Dan Jansen, and Eric Lindros; and other high achievers at the Human Performance Institute (HPI) to reveal surprising insights about achievement motivation. Specifically, Loehr finds that the blind pursuit of external achievement often results in emptiness, addiction, and, ironically, poor performance. It s not really about what you achieve, he argues, it s about who you become as a consequence of the chase.
